Latest from the West Coast

Latest from the West Coast:

Last week I had the opportunity to share the platform with Metiria
Turei, Green MP and spokesperson on Conservation, on a West Coast tour.
Metiria was speaking about long-finned eels (tuna), a species that are
in abundance in the Mokihinui River – and face serious threats due to
Meridian’s proposal. I spoke to audiences about the Mokihinui, showed
the DVD, and discussed options for energy use.

Our tour included talks in Granity (near the Mokihinui), Greymouth and
Hokitika. We had good coverage in the West Coast media, and lots of
opportunities to talk to local people, outdoor recreation students, and
look at what other proposals for power generation might be possible on
the Coast. A general impression was that the West Coast would like to
generate more of its own power to reduce costs, but that the schemes
should be appropriately sized and sited.
